Most deployments of asset technology begin with an integration. The customer's system of record has to be connected before the first item can be recorded, and that connection is where projects stall.

V Labs tested a different order of operations. The operator photographs the item, photographs its identifying label, and then photographs the customer's existing serial or license plate. The platform returns a complete record keyed to the customer's own identifier, and the customer updates its own system from that record.

The result is a deployment with no integration on day one. The integration, if it is wanted later, is a convenience rather than a prerequisite. The test was run with an operating customer and the approach is now in production use.

The identification chain has three stages. The engine first resolves identity, what the item is, against the categories it has been trained on and, where available, the organization's own catalog. It then assesses condition against a grading standard. Finally it returns a valuation with the basis for it, drawn from the item, the market and the channel.

Each stage carries a confidence. Where confidence is low the platform says so and routes the item to a person. The point is not to remove people from the decision but to make sure the decisions that reach them are the ones that need them.

Published data on bulk liquidation shows recovery falling sharply with lot size and varying widely by category. The largest lots recover a small fraction of retail value, and clothing recovers less than almost anything else.

The implication for disposition strategy is direct. Value is lost at the moment inventory is aggregated into a lot. Identifying and routing items before the lot forms, which is what the platform does, changes the outcome more than any negotiation over the lot afterward.
